Corning has introduced Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 for smartphones, describing it as the most durable Gorilla Glass it has ever produced. The company says the material is already being used on the Motorola Razr Fold, which was shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
If your phone’s display doesn’t shatter as readily as ordinary glass, there’s a good chance Corning is part of the reason. The US firm is not the only player making strengthened smartphone glass, but its products appear across a wide range of devices - including Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s premium models, among many others. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Corning pulled back the curtain on its latest flagship: Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3.
Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3: designed to stay tough over a phone’s lifetime
According to Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 is, so far, its “most durable Gorilla Glass ever made”. The company says its development work centred on long-term endurance, with the goal of keeping the glass resilient throughout the full lifespan of a device - not merely delivering strong performance when it is brand new.
“We design our materials with longevity in mind, not just initial performance,” said Lori Hamilton, Division Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Technology.
In laboratory testing, Corning reports that the glass withstood drops from heights of more than 2 metres onto surfaces intended to simulate concrete. The company also says Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 performs better when subjected to repeated impacts: tests indicated it could endure at least 20 consecutive drops from 1 metre onto surfaces designed to mimic asphalt.
Corning adds that “a competing aluminosilicate glass typically failed on the first drop”, which it says highlights the long-term durability benefits of Corning’s glass-ceramic technology.
The first smartphone to use it is Motorola’s Razr Fold
For now, only one handset is confirmed to be using this new Corning glass: the Motorola Razr Fold, a foldable smartphone Motorola is presenting at the Mobile World Congress.
However, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 is expected to reach other models from other brands as well. Its availability to smartphone manufacturers is particularly timely, as many people now keep the same phone for longer than they used to. Alongside that shift, a growing number of devices - including Android phones - now come with software support that can extend to as long as 7 years.
What this could mean for everyday use and longer ownership
Stronger cover glass can make a practical difference to day-to-day reliability, especially for people who carry their phone without a case or regularly use it on the move. Even so, durability claims are based on controlled tests, and real-world outcomes can still vary with factors such as impact angle, surface roughness, and whether an earlier knock has already weakened the glass.
There is also a broader benefit: if screens are less likely to break, owners may be more inclined to keep devices in service for the full span of their software support - and beyond. That can reduce the frequency of repairs and replacements, aligning better with the trend towards longer smartphone ownership and potentially lowering the number of devices discarded prematurely.
