Chevrolet has officially confirmed the timing for its new Sonic, a compact SUV slated to go on sale in the second quarter of 2026, between April and June. The 2027-model-year Sonic will be built in Gravataí, Brazil, on the same production line as the Onix, which underpins the new vehicle.

Positioned between Onix and Tracker to take on key small-SUV rivals

The Sonic will sit in Chevrolet’s range between the Onix and the Tracker, targeting buyers in the fast-growing small SUV segment. It is expected to compete directly with the Fiat Pulse, Volkswagen Tera and Renault Kardian.

Chevrolet has already opened pre-registration for customers who want updates and information about the model ahead of its arrival.

First official teaser highlights rear styling and ‘size impression’ design approach

A published image of the rear end indicates the Sonic will feature LED rear lights, a black Chevrolet badge and a rear spoiler. Unlike some coupé-styled crossovers, the Sonic will retain a rear window wiper.

Chevrolet is expected to apply what it calls a “size impression” design theme-aimed at making the vehicle look larger than it is-using a higher-set bonnet line and split-level lighting, similar to the Montana and the updated Tracker.

Engine line-up not yet confirmed, with turbo-petrol expected

Chevrolet has not formally announced the Sonic’s engine range. However, the most likely option is a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Lower-priced versions may use a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine, while a future variant could adopt the Tracker’s 1.2-litre turbo engine.

Safety tech expected to bring higher-end features to a smaller model

The Sonic is anticipated to offer cameras and driver-assistance technology, including forward-collision alert and automatic emergency braking-features that have previously been reserved for Chevrolet’s higher-end models.
