Audi readies A2 e-tron as its most affordable electric car, due in 2026

Audi is putting the finishing touches to its cheapest electric vehicle yet, the A2 e-tron, ahead of a planned 2026 launch, according to sources. The new model is intended to pick up where the compact BMW i3 left off after it exited the market in 2022, targeting drivers who want a small, premium EV designed for city life.

New compact EV positioned alongside Volkswagen’s ID.3 - but with its own identity

The A2 e-tron is being developed as an “electric sibling” to the Volkswagen ID.3, rather than a reworked crossover. Unlike the Q4 e-tron, the newcomer is expected to feature distinct Audi styling and is not simply a redesigned version of an existing Volkswagen SUV.

MEB platform confirmed, with two battery options and up to 600 km WLTP range

Instead of using the more advanced SSP architecture once planned, the A2 e-tron will be built on the MEB platform. Sources say Audi will offer two battery packs:

  • 58 kWh (expected 426 km WLTP range)
  • 79 kWh (expected up to 600 km WLTP range)

Pricing in Europe is expected to start at around £30,000, which would make it Audi’s most affordable EV.

Prototypes spotted on public roads and during winter testing in Sweden

Test cars have already been seen on public roads and during a cold-weather programme in Sweden. The prototype silhouette reportedly echoes hallmarks of the original Audi A2, including compact proportions and improved aerodynamics.

Audi’s development focus is said to be on efficiency and everyday urban usability, with the aim of filling the gap for a small premium electric hatchback.

Timed with Volkswagen’s push into lower-cost EVs

The A2 e-tron is expected to arrive as Volkswagen broadens its range of more affordable electric models, including the anticipated ID. Polo. For Audi, the strategy appears to be reclaiming a segment that has been largely open since the BMW i3 was discontinued, leaving few direct rivals in the compact premium EV space.
