Kia’s PV5 electric van begins US road testing, hinting at potential future launch

Kia has been spotted running road tests in the United States with its new PV5 electric van, a production model from the brand’s fresh PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) line-up. The prototype was seen in Michigan and carried features aligned with US regulations, including front and rear side marker lights-suggesting compliance checks, although Kia has not confirmed any official American launch.

PV5 is the first production model from Kia’s PBV range

The PV5 is built on Kia’s E-GMP.S platform and uses a modular design that allows the upper body section to be swapped quickly. That approach is intended to let the same base vehicle be configured for different roles, ranging from a people carrier to a cargo-focused van.

In size terms, the PV5 is smaller than the long-wheelbase Volkswagen ID. Buzz. However, Kia is aiming to maximise usable cabin space through a flat floor and short overhangs, which can improve packaging efficiency for both passengers and payload.

Front-mounted electric motor and two battery options

Kia is fitting the PV5 with a front-mounted electric motor rated at 163 hp. Buyers will have a choice of two battery packs: 51.5 kWh or 71.2 kWh, with the larger option delivering a claimed range of up to 249 miles (about 401 km).

The specification also includes fast-charging capability, vehicle-to-load (V2L) power output for running external equipment, and over-the-air software updates.

Confirmed for Korea and Europe, while US plans remain unannounced

Kia has already confirmed that the PV5 will go on sale in South Korea and across Europe. While testing on American roads does not automatically mean a US market debut, the presence of a US-compliant prototype keeps that possibility open.

If it does reach the US, the PV5 could appeal to small businesses seeking a flexible electric van-an area where there are currently few truly versatile battery-electric options.
